Desktop App2013Yonder – Distributed Media Encoder
Java GUI application leveraging local area network (LAN) compute power to cooperatively encode and decode media.
Overview
Yonder is a distributed systems desktop application designed to harness idle computational power across multiple PCs on a Local Area Network (LAN) to accelerate media encoding and transcoding tasks.
Key Engineering Highlights
- Peer Discovery & Networking: Custom LAN peer discovery protocol and TCP/IP socket communication to coordinate distributed compute nodes.
- Task Distribution Engine: Chunk-based file transfer mechanism dividing large video files across available worker nodes.
- FFmpeg Interfacing: Java-to-native process wrapping invoking FFmpeg libraries for media processing.
- Concurrency & UI: Built with Java multithreading, synchronization primitives, and Windows Builder Eclipse plug-in for GUI construction.
